How do we work out servings?
We use Wilton's serving chart, a standard baking reference. Party servings assume slices about 1½ inches wide and 2 inches long; wedding servings assume thinner slices about 1 x 2 inches, which is why a wedding cake of the same size goes further. Both assume a cake about 4 inches high, which is usually two layers.
Many cakes sold in Ghana are a single layer. Wilton notes that cakes under 3 inches high give about half the servings, so the calculator halves the count when you pick "1 layer". Always tell your baker how many guests you have, not just the size, and ask how they cut.

How many people does an 8-inch cake serve?
A two-layer 8-inch round cake serves about 20 people with party slices (about 1½ x 2 inches) or 24 with thinner wedding slices, using Wilton's serving chart. A single-layer 8-inch cake serves about half that.
How many people does a 6-inch cake serve?
About 12 slices from a two-layer 6-inch round, or around 6 if it's a single short layer. It suits a small family celebration or an office team.
How many people does a bento cake serve?
A 4-inch bento cake is made for one to four people. Cut into very small slices, a tall 4-inch cake can stretch to about 8 pieces.
What size cake do I need for 50 people?
Using party slices, a single 12-inch two-layer cake serves about 40, so for 50 people you'd need a 14-inch cake (about 63) or three tiers of 6, 8 and 10 inches (about 60). With thinner wedding slices, one 12-inch cake serves about 56.
What does "size 6" mean?
Ghanaian bakers often say "size 6" or "size 8" for the diameter of a round cake in inches. A size 6 cake is 6 inches across. Ask how many layers it has too: a two-layer cake is about twice the height, and feeds about twice as many people, as a single layer.
