Where does the bento cake come from?
"Bento" is the Japanese word for a packed lunchbox, but the bento cake itself was popularised by bakeries in South Korea, which sold small cakes in lunchbox-style containers as an easy treat to carry. The trend spread around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people held smaller gatherings and a big party cake made less sense.
In Ghana, bento cakes took off on Instagram and TikTok and are now sold by most home bakers and many bakeries. You'll also see the spelling "binto cake" in listings.
How big is a bento cake and how many does it serve?
Most bento cakes in Ghana are 4 inches across and two layers high. Some bakers make 5 or 6-inch "big bento" versions, so check the size when you compare prices.

When is a bento cake a good choice?
Bento cakes work best when the cake is the gift rather than the centre of a party:

- Valentine's Day, Mother's Day or an anniversary
- a "just because" treat delivered to someone's office
- a small celebration at home for two to four people
For a party where everyone should get a slice, a bento cake is too small. Look at a 6 or 8-inch birthday cake instead, or a bento and cupcake set so there's something for more guests.
