Short answer
How do Ghanaian bakers price a birthday cake?
Almost every baker starts from the size: the diameter in inches, often written "size 6" or "size 8". Then they add for:
- Layers. A two-layer cake is taller and serves about twice as many people as a single layer of the same width. Some bakers sell "tall" cakes with three or four layers.
- Icing. Whipped cream is the cheapest finish, buttercream costs more and fondant costs most. Our guide to whipped cream vs buttercream vs fondant explains the difference.
- Flavours. Many bakers charge extra for two flavours in one cake, or for red velvet and premium chocolate.
- Decoration. Fresh fruit, macarons, chocolate drips, gold leaf, printed toppers, money-pull boxes and hand-made figures each add to the price.
- Delivery. Usually extra, charged by distance.
That's why two "8-inch cakes" can be hundreds of cedis apart.
What does each size cost?
From the prices we found in October 2026:
- 6-inch: GH₵200 to GH₵1,000. Feeds about 12 people as a two-layer cake.
- 8-inch: GH₵280 to GH₵1,750. Feeds about 20.
- 10-inch: GH₵440 to GH₵1,500. Feeds about 28.
Serving counts use party slices from Wilton's chart and assume two layers; a single-layer cake serves about half. Our birthday cake price page lists every price with the baker and area, and the cake size guide tells you what size to order for your guests.
Which flavours do Ghanaian bakers offer?
Vanilla, chocolate and red velvet are on almost every baker's menu, and many price lists offer "two flavours" in one cake, usually split by layer, for a small extra charge. Strawberry, banana, marble, coconut, carrot and cookies and cream are common too.
Red velvet often costs a little more than vanilla or chocolate, and it's usually paired with cream cheese frosting or buttercream. Our red velvet cake prices page lists what bakers charge for it. Fruit cake is a separate, denser cake that's most popular at Christmas and for some weddings.
If you're feeding a mixed group, two flavours is a safe choice: one chocolate layer for the chocolate lovers and one vanilla or red velvet layer for everyone else.
How can you get a good price?
- Decide the size from your guest count, not from a photo. Many people order bigger than they need.
- Choose whipped cream or buttercream instead of fondant if the party is indoors.
- Keep the design simple and add impact with colour, fresh fruit or a single topper.
- Order early. Rush orders and busy dates such as Valentine's and December often cost more.
- Pick up the cake yourself if the baker is nearby, to save the delivery fee.
- Get two or three quotes for the same size, icing and design. We can get them for you.
Watch out for prices far below everyone else's. A very cheap cake can be smaller than described, or a scam; read how to order a cake safely.
